Smartphone Show

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Yesterday, I was at the Symbian Smartphone show in London. Here are the things that caught my attention and my thoughts…
First of all, I went to the Sony Ericsson pre-show pub meet. This was a bit disappointing. It was mainly ‘marketing-speak’ with very little value for developers (apart from food and drink!). Talking to people at […]

Mobile Operating Systems: The New Generation

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

There’s a new free report at ARCChart which reviews the software platforms from 15 vendors - A la Mobile platform, Access Linux Platform, Adobe Flash Lite, GTK+, MiniGUI, Mizi Prizm, MontaVista Mobilinux, Nokia S60, Obigo Suite, Openwave MIDAS, Qualcomm BREW, SavaJe, Symbian OS, Trolltech Qtopia and Windows Mobile.

The report is free because it is […]

Google Code Search

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Just came across the new Google Code Search. It works very much like my popular Symbian Codex and J2ME Codex which I produced about a year ago.
I thought I would see how useful the Google Code Search will be for mobile developers. I typed in ‘extends midlet’ to get all J2ME applications. I got ‘about’ 700 references. Wow. Next […]

AllFiles Capability and File Explorers

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

It’s about six months since I had trouble writing my file explorer and suggested that Nokia should have some policy regarding manufacturer approved capabilities. Nokia Process Guidelines

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

This post is mainly for the many startup companies who come to me with vague ideas for mobile applications. They usually want to know two things - is the application possible and how much will it cost. While I can provide ‘ball park’ answers, the ‘devil is in the detail’ and it’s often necessary to dig […]

MobileQuery.com

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

Due to the current popularity of the mobile web I have resurrected something I was tinkering with in 2002 - single page mobile web applications.
Back then, I wrote the mobile web applications in c++ and used ISAPI. This was complicated as I had to render the information in WML or HTML depending on the phone browser […]

Enterprise Email

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

There’s a rather confused press release at IDC that talks about the market for converged mobile devices capable of receiving enterprise email. More specifically, devices with a QWERTY keyboard or stylus/soft keyboard.
While I agree that RIM’s dominance is being challenged, I believe that IDC haven’t understood Nokia’s offering. This means they have over-estimated the possible dominance of Windows Mobile.
In […]
