Sony Ericsson JAVA CDC Available

sonyericsson.gifSony Ericsson Developer World have released a beta version of the JAVA ME CDC for the SE P990. This replaces PersonalJava which was in the P800, P900 and P910. Note that this is totally separate to J2ME and provides another (much richer) way of programming in JAVA for the P990.

The developer guidelines give an insight into CDC development. Sony Ericsson recommend you have a CDC aware development environment such as IBM WSDD. Application installation and security follows Symbian C++ rather than .jar and JavaVerified practices. More specifically, JAVA applications are packaged up as .SIS files and require platform security capabilities such that, depending on the exact functionality you use, you may need to submit your application to Symbian Signed.

In the short term, I expect that CDC development will be constrained to enterprise development where code can be reused across client and server. The Nokia Series 80 already supports CDC and will be added to the Series 60 platform. When this happens, more developers (and IDEs) might take up JAVA ME CDC.
