Android Upgradability as a Differentiator

android.gifI have written a few times questioning how the many Android phone OEMs are going to differentiate their devices.

With a recent article on The Register about Samsung’s Galaxy being stuck in history and the fact that my fairly old G1 now has a newer OS (1.6) than my newer T-Mobile Pulse (on 1.5) have made me question whether upgradability might become one important differentiating factor.

The difference in versions might not seem to mean that much. However, while the OS is still evolving, some key features such as, for example, handsfree bluetooth can make all the difference between an average phone and a really great one for say someone who travels a lot by car. Similarly, as newer, more immersive 3rd party applications become available that depend on newer OS features, people may seek the newer OS versions on their phones.
