Smartphone Rollout Beyond High End Buyer
Yesterday I was looking at forwarding-looking development when I wrote about Qt. However, I also look at what’s happening ‘here and now’ as that’s what affects companies creating mobile products today. As part of this I receive the paper version of UK’s Mobile Today, mainly targetted at phone retailers, that gives me a week by week account of what people are buying and why.
Here in the UK, it’s being reported that "Christmas comes early for mobile retailers" and that "touch-screens, such as the Samsung Genio and N97 mini, had experienced impressive sales".
The Editor of Mobile Today, James Atkinson, runs a blog where he says…
"mobiles are now seen by many as being an essential part of their life rather than a luxury item…"
and…
"the much-anticipated rollout of smartphones beyond the high-end buyer is actually happening"
Success in technology is often linked to timing. Over the years I have seen many mobile software services and products fail because they were before their time. There weren’t enough end users and the ones that were there just didn’t ‘get it’ or ‘want it’. Today people want touch screens and they seek applications. The iPhone really has revolutionised the industry for all platforms. Maybe it’s the time to resurrect some of those old ideas?
