Nokia’s Plans

AllAboutSymbian has a very interesting article on Nokia’s Capital Market’s Day. The most interesting part for mobile developers is Nokia’s mid-term plans for changing their platform bias…

This shows that Nokia plans to ship far more Symbian devices and far fewer S40 devices. I suspect this will be through necessity more than anything else. It must be getting increasingly difficult to provide the features people want on the S40 platform. Also, the future is in applications and services that are much more capable on Symbian than under Java ME. Also Qt, Nokia’s attempt to make programming simpler, ties into Symbian and Maemo, not Java ME.

Interestingly, there’s no mention of netbooks/tablets or Windows (used in their Booklet). Maybe Nokia’s Symbian devices will move in that direction or that might be Maemo’s future role.
