Nokia Riles Operators

The paper version of Mobile Today has published a headline article ‘Nokia Riles Operators with Skype’.

It says 02 and Orange "are understood to have vented their anger in high-level discussions, which involved group level executives from Nokia"

"The row centres around ownership of the customer and well as potential lost calls from Skype’s internet call service"

With Nokia failing to convice operators about Comes With Music and now this showdown over Skype, I question how well placed Nokia really is to move from a devices to services company.

I suspect Nokia will have to do other things in order to gain acceptance from network operators. I am not sure what can be done. Educate users better to demand these services from operators? Provide alternative revenue models for operators (e.g. Skype Out)? Maybe bypass operators and sell more phones SIM free?

The paper version of MobileToday is dated tomorrow (27th) so I suspect the article will appear online later today or tomorrow.
