Gartner: Apple Overtakes Microsoft As No. 3 Smartphone OS Vendor
The latest Gartner statistics for Q308 show some interesting changes in the smartphone market…
- Apple Overtakes Microsoft As No. 3 Smartphone OS Vendor
- Worldwide smartphone sales to end-users totalled 36.5 million units in the third quarter of 2008
- The current economic climate is negatively impacting sales of higher end devices
- Symbian commanded 49.8 per cent of the global sales to end users in the third quarter of 2008 and for the first time its share went below the 50 per cent mark
- North America was the fastest growing market, with a 68 per cent increase in the third quarter of 2008
The iPhone’s staggering growth at 327.5% explains why developers are attracted towards it and why there are already over 10,000 applications.
Personally, I think in the future we will look back and conclude these statistics didn’t mean much. With only 36.5 million out of an estimated 250 to 300 million total phones (per quarter) being sold currently being smartphones, there’s ample scope for any OS to be truly successful.
