Canalys Q3 2008 Statistics
The latest Canalys statistics show global smart phone shipments up 28%. This means smartphones now represent about 13% of the total mobile phone market, up from 11% last quarter. Nokia showed negative growth at -3.4% while Apple, RIM, Motorola and HTC all showed healthy growth. Apple showed a great 523% growth taking it into second place after Nokia. The Q3 smart phone market by operating system shows that Symbian is the only OS with negative growth at -12.4% mainly due to the decline in shipments of Symbian devices by Japanese vendors.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the next year. Will Apple be able to sustain long term sales? What will be the affect of Android? Will Nokia’s mid-price touch screen smartphones help restore Symbian’s market share?
