Mobile Application Renaissance

compassintelligence.gifAccording to new research from CompassIntelligence.com, businesses in the US will spend roughly $11.6 billion on mobile applications by 2012. This year alone, US businesses are expected to spend an estimated $4.9 billion on mobile applications.

I tend to be sceptical of predictions such as these - especially in mobile where things are changing so quickly. However, I have first hand anecdotal evidence to back up the fact that there’s been a renaissance in mobile application development.

It started when the first the first iPhone shipped. Even though was no SDK, it fired peoples’ imagination as to what might be possible via mobile. Ever since then I have had a huge surplus of work and new leads.

In fact, I am left wondering what to do with all the leads. I currently pass them on to trusted colleagues in the industry but can’t help but wonder if I am missing some opportunity. However, growing the amount of work I take on would take me away from what I really enjoy (consultancy and development) and into areas I am less passionate about (managing people).

Remember, the Compass research relates to only the US and only business applications. Imagine what the World market for all mobile applications might become.
