Carbide.vs
The impact of the Nokia Mobility Conference and its associated announcements was such that Carbide.vs was released almost unnoticed.
Carbide.vs, formerly known as "Nokia Developer’s Suite for Symbian OS", provides facilities to develop in Symbian/C++ using Visual Studio .NET 2003. After Nokia’s announcement of the Eclipse based Carbide.C++ at the Symbian Smartphone Show, I had expected the Developers’ Suite to be quietly discontinued. Instead, Nokia have updated it to support the latest Series 60 Platform 3rd Edition.
For developers who already have VS.NET 2003, Carbide.vs now provides a free alternative to (the paid for) Codewarrior 3.1 for anyone wishing to start Series 60 3rd Edition development. It also provides a way to easily develop for Series 60 3rd Edition before (the free) Carbide.C++ Express becomes available early next year.
So why is the Carbide.C++ product range also being developed? What will it add when released next year? Being Eclipse based, Carbide.C++ Express should provide productivity enhancements such as code refactoring and well as provide support for UIQ SDKs. The paid for ‘Developer’ edition, due later in 2006, will also provide RAD development of user interfaces.
