Getting To Market

symbian.gifSymbian Developer Network has a great new booklet on ‘Getting To Market‘. Even if you don’t develop for Symbian there are plenty of hints and tips on how to go about releasing your application.

One thing I am curious about is why Symbian included the following chart…

The placement of the chart not only seems out of context with the text but also seems to show application sales declining over the last two years - not necessarily a great endorsement.

There’s no further explanation of what the ‘number of applications sold’ (in the hundreds) actually means. I suspect it’s actually application titles rather than actual sales!

If you wish to learn more about routes to market you might also like to read the guide I wrote for Sony Ericsson last year.

Update 19th June 2008 : Symbian have contacted me to say the chart is incorrect because the data used was incomplete for Q1 2008 when it was generated. Although they haven’t, as yet, updated the booklet, the correct values are as follows…

The values are indeed unique application titles (not sales of the application in units). Symbian use four leading online software retailers to gather the statistics.
