Is a luxury phone a contradiction in terms?

linkedinlogo.gifOne of my contacts on LinkedIn, Abraham Joseph founder of the Device Management Forum, emailed me about a question he has posted in the Wireless section of LinkedIn: Answers. Abraham asks a few questions regarding Luxury phones but the key question is…

"Vertu’s success aside, will there really be a big market for luxury phones with device life cycles of 5 years or more?"

Personally, I don’t believe there will be a big market - as in mass-market. There will always be a small but lucrative market for Vertu-like luxury phones but people won’t buy them in the same way as jewellery or watches. The main problem I see is that jewellery and watches can last a lifetime and can often be sold for a similar order of price as they were bought - unlike mobile phones that quickly become out of date and worthless.
