Symbian Signed Under Attack
It seems that Symbian Signed has been hacked yet again.
Given by the number of emails I receive about signing freeware, I have concluded that many end users just don’t understand the new signing processes. Some people are asking me to sign freeware applications that I didn’t even author (which I don’t do). Others are asking why self signing doesn’t work for applications with UIDs in the protected range.
I also believe that these misunderstandings and the previous unavailablity of the SymbianSigned web site have contributed to people becoming frustrated and trying to hack the security mechanisms - and succeeding.
It’s a shame because the new processes are workable for everyone - providing you are not trying to sign cracked software. It’s just that the whole thing is far too complex and isn’t user-friendly for typical end users. They don’t want all these complexities, they just want to install software.
