Own the Solution?

rcrwirelessnews.gifThere’s an enlightening post at RCR Wireless News that suggests how companies might take on RIM (BlackBerry) and Apple (iPhone).

The article suggests that owning the solution may be the key to success in that both RIM and Apple own their respective solutions end to end.

I can think of a two further examples that back this up…

  • Companies such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Microsoft tend to outsource their online software stores. This has rarely been satisfactory for all parties. Apple are about to ‘own’ iPhone software sales.
  • Network operators haven’t created many (3G) added value services themselves. Instead, they have tended to buy in solutions that haven’t been that successful.
If this article is correct, the trend for outsourcing that started in the 80’s and continues today may be less suitable for mobile. Then again, it may just be coincidence that RIM and Apple own their own solutions.
