I bit of a reflective post this one - but hopefully it will inspire someone because I know many students read my blog.

I often wonder why I don’t get bored working in mobile and IT in general. I think the reason is because of the large range of domains in which I have worked. Yes, the same problems come up again and again - but there’s always a fresh subject area to learn and explore.

Just in mobile, the areas in which I have worked have included transport/ticketing, surveillance, health, creating operating systems, television, photography, advertising and well as obviously other communications of various types. If I expand out to my pre-mobile life, I have worked on naval sonar, wargames (yes, like the film!), creating database systems and even car engine testing! It’s an amazing variation.

So, working in IT isn’t necessarily boring. If you are already in IT and bored then try moving jobs to a different subject domain!
