Sony Ericsson XPERIA™ X1

windowsMobile_masthead_ltr.gifLast September, following HTC’s announcement that they had won a Windows Mobile Smartphone order from Sony Ericsson, I commented on how this tie up made sense from a market and device-creation point of view.

experiax1.jpgToday, with the announcement of the XPERIA™ X1 we can further guess why Windows Mobile has been used. The device is a new form factor for Sony Ericsson, more in common with the Nokia E90 Communicator than their existing UIQ based devices. When Nokia moved S60 to this form factor, many criticised this decision because the S60-based OS UI didn’t end up as usable as the previous Nokia S80 devices. Similarly, with UIQ, I suspect the change in form factor may have involved too much effort, too much time and may have compromised the UI.
