Slow Symbian Emulator

symbian.gifI have been doing some Windows Mobile development this week that has caused me to reflect on emulation. With Visual Studio 2005 and a Pocket PC SDK I can turnround small code changes and restart the emulator in seconds. Why can’t I do the same with the Nokia S60 and UIQ Symbian-based emulators? I believe this is a serious problem that slows productivity.

This isn’t just a problem for 3rd party developers. Symbian themselves use the TechView emulator that isn’t that much faster. Just think how much work could be done if there was less waiting for the emulator.

Yes, I know it’s sometimes possible to keep the Symbian based emulator up and compile underneath it, but it’s not always possible, especially when changing resource  files.
