Following on from my previous post on Symbian OS 9 Platform Security, Nokia have now publicly released the Beta for the Series 60 Third Edition SDK for Symbian OS. If you install the SDK and look in the Series60Doc directory you will find lots more information on Nokia’s specific implementation of the new Symbian platform security.

Remembering the exact details are still preliminary (it’s a beta after all), we are told Series 60 application signing will be mandatory. However, it will be possible to ’self-sign’ an application in which case it will be signed but untrusted. Here’s an excerpt from the s60_3_0_capability_overview_0_94.pdf document which described how freeware applications will still be able to access pertinent APIs…
