S60 Symbian Platform Security Defeated
There’s a fascinating post at Symbaali.com that describes how to modify the ROM to change the Symbian Platform Security User capabilities and JAVA untrusted permissions. There’s even an example of how to change Y-Browser to add AllFiles capability which, when used with the new ROM, allows browsing to any directory.
As previously explained, AllFiles was never given to File Explorer type applications because this would expose DRM and copy protection security holes. In allowing users to update their own phone firmware, Nokia seem to have let the genie out of the bottle.
Update 27th October: Read Antony Pranata’s and Gábor Török’s take on this.
