Mobile Linux
Russ continues to be controversial yet inspirational when he says he now thinks the future of mobility is Linux. He may be right. More specifically, Symbian (or Microsoft for that matter) may not turn out to be the leading mobile OS in the future. However, saying Linux is the future may be a bit premature.
Recently I came across SavaJe, a little known mobile OS based on JAVA. Apparently, Savaje is about to make some bold moves in the mobile space. Hence, there’s yet another mobile OS contender.
I also learnt that Trolltech has added Juha Christensen and Tod Nielsen to its Board of Directors. Trolltech, with its application platform, libraries and development environment, is well placed to take advantage of any uptake in the use of mobile Linux.
Companies such as Trolltech are important as they might fill the gaps which Symbian and Microsoft are already filling. It’s not just a case of having a mobile OS. Thought has to be given to areas such as development tools, deployment tools and applications.
Update: November 2005: SavaJe have announced that LG have produced the first SavaJe phone.
