Smartphone Delays

ti2420.jpgThere are have been some news articles saying Ericsson and Texas Instruments have partnered to allow Ericsson’s 3G modems to be used with TI’s OMAP hardware. For example, infosync have said, under the title "Future smartphones to face fewer delays"

"Smartphones are bound to ship faster now that Ericsson and Texas Instruments have joined forces."

I think this is misleading. If you look at recent smartphone delays you will find that they were caused by software, not hardware. Yes, the partnership may allow smartphones to ship faster, but not not to any significant degree.

Incidentally, the above image is the TI 2420 processor used in the the Nokia E90, N93 and N95, Nokia 800 Internet tablet, Windows Mobile Motorola Q and Motorola UIQ-based Z8.
