PayPal Mobile Checkout
PayPal released it’s revolutionary PayPal Mobile Checkout this week. It’s strange the mobile community hasn’t latched onto this and even stranger that PayPal hasn’t shouted about it.
I believe the mobile checkout is significant because …
-
It leverages PayPal’s existing membership base to provide a purchase without registering and with a minimum of choices, text entry and clicks.
-
It provides very low transaction fees without having to pay an intermediary
-
Unlike previous PayPal incarnations it doesn’t just work in the US and UK
-
It can work from WAP (2.0), via SMS (containing a link) or even from within a Java or native application
It’s very simple to operate with a single http call to PayPal. This then deals with the transaction via the phone WAP (2.0) browser that then forwards to a URL given in the original http request. In the case of downloaded content, this will be the merchant’s server that will provide a link to the content.
With intermediaries’ commissions out of the loop it also becomes viable to sell tangible goods.
