Vodafone User Agent

vodafone.jpgVodafone created a stir in the mobile development community today when they released their mobile adaptation technology. Several people on the London MoMo email group and The Register were the first to spot the problems.

The biggest problem is that the new gateway isn’t passing through the user agent. Hence, any server that has functionality that depends on using this to determine the phone type won’t work any more. People using eCommerce have been the first to shout (since they are losing money!). However many application download mechanisms and dynamically sized web/wap content have also broken.

First, it’s surprising Vodafone didn’t realise this would happen. Second, it’s amazing this wasn’t tested with a limited number of users before being rolled out to the public. Furthermore, it’s not the first time this has happened. A similar fiasco happened a couple of years ago when Vodafone rolled out a system for screening adult content.
