Wireless Labs PowerBoot

symbian.gifWireless Labs PowerBoot S60 freeware became available over the last few days. It’s an application that allows the user to specify which applications start on boot. It’s especially interesting because it allows the user to start other 3rd party applications - something that would usually require those applications to pass Symbian Signed testing.

The previous thinking was that applications starting at boot might misbehave and that they should be tested via Symbian Signed. Presumably, what allowed PowerBoot to open up this functionality (ie be Symbian Signed) was the fact that the user is specifying which applications start. Hence the user would be aware that this can cause problems during boot. Alternatively, it may just be that Cellmania signed off the application without thinking of the consequences.

Whatever the reasoning, it’s great that this application has become available. I have come across many ideas for applications that need Symbian Signing solely due to the need for start on boot functionality.

As an aside, you can start your own application on boot by changing the resource file (and signing with DevCert or Symbian Signed cert). Note that you will also have to do some extra work to allow the application to installed to memory card and allow the autostart to be disabled by the user.
