S60 Dominance
There’s a recent thought provoking comment by Nick Jones, a Gartner Analyst, entitled ‘Nokia Widgets Will Encourage S60 Mobile Services’.
Ignoring all the Widget stuff for the moment it’s this paragraph that caught my eye…
"Nokia and S60 dominate the consumer smartphone market, shipping over half of all smartphones in 2006 (approximately 40 million units). This dominance provides a sufficient critical mass to get the attention of developers, whose interest is already reflected in the fact that key Web sites — including those of Reuters and Amazon — are reportedly building S60 widgets to extend their reach to S60 devices"
This latest press release by Nokia also reinforces the view of S60 becoming dominant.
What Nick suggested is equally applicable to native development. In the past I have seen S60 native development mainly being tried by companies because it was one of the few technical routes able to implement particular solution - with immediate sales being less of an issue for these research type projects. If Nick Jones is correct, S60 may become more attractive to develop for just due to the sheer numbers of phones being shipped.
