Single Core Nokia S60

freescale.gifHartti Suomela on the Nokia Forum blogs has announced that CPU information is now displayed on the device specification pages. While this might not seem that interesting, it does show which devices are dual or single CPU. For example, the 5700, 6110, 6290 are single CPU devices. The more complex phones such as the E90, N77, N95 have dual CPUs that handle time-critical telephony and applications separately.

The shipping of single CPU devices represents a significant milestone for Nokia and Symbian. According to Ring Nokia they are based on the Freescale single core that drives both telephony and applications. In reducing the complexity of the S60 phone, Symbian and Nokia are entering the lower price device market segments.

It’s strange that there hasn’t been any publicity surrounding what must be the first commercially available single core phones using a platform OS.
