$150 Billion by 2011
Informa’s latest report concludes that the mobile web heralds a new age…
"…the introduction of a whole host of new players into the value chain presents new opportunities for growth in the mobile content and services market, whilst simultaneously posing a threat to mobile operators who face losing control of the billing relationship with their customers"
While I think things are improving with better phones, software and inclusive tariffs I think we need some new ideas before things really take off.
Some obvious problems as I see them…
- The typical phone screen is still far too small
- People aren’t really putting in effort to create mobile specific sites
- Automatically transcoded sites are still too large
- Can’t access phone features - link with phone, contacts, alarms, files etc
- Problem of offline mode when there’s no signal
- There’s no obvious/easy way to discover new (non-operator portal) services
As with most problems, this will lead to new opportunities for some people.
