London MoMo London
Yesterday evening’s MoMo was themed ‘Mobile Social Networking’.
Martin Monteiro from Hutchinson 3G UK described the ‘See Me’ service that’s based on user generated video clips. Unfortunately due to privacy and corporate responsibility concerns, everything is moderated and only accessible to over 18’s. Furthermore, it’s currently limited to 3 subscribers. Contrastingly, Sean Kane from Intercasting Corp explained that mobile social networking is mainly used by kids and is all about being noticed (rather than being private).
Stephen Johnston from Nokia Corporate Strategy gave a presentation on the Nokia view of mobile social networking. He ended with the matra that "Nokia is going to be an Internet company". I am sceptical.
I came away thinking the big mobile companies are playing well outside their core competencies rather than partnering with people. Consequently, some end up producing services that are inherently limited due to being conceived and controlled in-house.
Update 17th December: The latest stats from M:Metrics back up Sean Kane’s claim that teans are the most active in mobile user-generated content and social networking.
