Windows Mobile Market

windowsMobile_masthead_ltr.gifIt has always been difficult work out the size of the connected Microsoft Windows Mobile Market. Reports tend to quote non-connected Pocket PC sales. Reports including connected devices tend to hide the OS under manufacturers (e.g. Motorola in the previously mentioned IDC report) that also sell phones based on other mobile operating systems. Phones also end up being included in the ‘Others’ manufacturer category.

Peter Knook, head of Microsoft’s Mobile and Embedded Devices division has just been quoted as saying that Microsoft aims to double the number of mobile phones running its Windows software this year from 6 million at the end of 2005. Note that 6 Million is for all years up to and including 2005, not just the sales in 2005. So how many were sold in 2005?

I do remember an Orange sponsored event at the end of 2005 where it was mentioned that of the order of 1 million Pocket PC Phones were expected to be sold that year. Hence, a jump to 6 million phones for 2006 would represent a very large jump. However feasible this really is, it’s still very very small compared to the 1 Billion phones expected to be sold in 2006.
