Enterprise Email

idc.gifThere’s a rather confused press release at IDC that talks about the market for converged mobile devices capable of receiving enterprise email. More specifically, devices with a QWERTY keyboard or stylus/soft keyboard.

While I agree that RIM’s dominance is being challenged, I believe that IDC haven’t understood Nokia’s offering. This means they have over-estimated the possible dominance of Windows Mobile.

In particular, the press release says…

"Nokia is offering an end-to-end solution of its own, while Motorola and Palm, among others, are leveraging Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange"

In actual fact, Nokia (and Sony Ericsson UIQ 3.0 for that matter) is email service agnostic. A "push" email client is not installed on the device when it is shipped. For Nokia devices you can visit the Nokia Business Software site and choose which wireless email conduit you need, Visto, Good, BlackBerry, ActiveSync or Seven, to connect to your server.
