October London MoMo London
The theme for last night’s MoMo London was "The Real Mobile Web". While I guess the audience didn’t really learn anything new, the talks and networking demonstrated that most people see the mobile web evolving the same way. There also seemed to be consensus as to what’s currently holding back the mobile web.
Here are the key things I took away from the event…
-
There’s a large long tail for mobile web applications. i.e. A large number of things that relatively fewer people want to access.
-
Browsers are sometimes insufficient and may eventually be aided via small applications or widgets.
-
"One web" will prevail over a separate mobile web.
-
There’s a large skepticism over .mobi with many people considering it a waste of time and having a high probability of failure.
-
Large (and unknown) data costs continue to hold back mobile web usage.
-
Phones are still being supplied by network operators that have not been set up for Internet access. Furthermore, there’s no easy/automated way for consumers to easily enable access.
