E61 Popular = S60 Software more popular?

e61_1.jpgOn Tommi’s S60 Applications Blog, Tommi asks why the ESeries is creating more passionate users than NSeries. In particular, why are there so many ESeries blogs?

If you look at the blogs, they are mostly about the E61. My theory is that the E61 is different in that it appeals to the early adopter who previously might have gone for a UIQ, Windows Mobile or Psion device. These kind of people write blogs. Interestingly, these people also do something else… they buy software.

Conversely, the other S60 3rd Edition devices (and S60 1st/2nd) mainly attract the ‘upgrade’ crowd who aren’t especially interested in the fact it’s a smartphone. As I have said previously, I think many typical purchasers see the S60 as just a better specified phone. Most people (at least in the UK) receive them as part of a ‘free’ upgrade and do not use the extra features nor install extra software.

If my theory is correct, the E61 may revitalise the S60 software market… at a time when some developers such as iSilo, due to past experience, aren’t interested in trying to migrate to S60 3rd Edition.
