Tiggdo and Mobile Web Applications
A few days ago, I came across tiggdo.com, a new free way of creating your own personalized WAP pages/RRS feeds that you can continue to add and edit. The author, Sanj of JAR Developments told me…
"I had initially thought about creating the platform using J2ME, but having built numerous midlets and experiencing the painful porting process to other phones I thought it would be better to make it browser based. This way you are capturing a much larger market as it will work across all handsets be they Series 60, Symbian, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile etc etc"
There’s a growing trend to make mobile applications web-based. In fact, I know of a few companies who have attempted a client application and have moved to the mobile web so as to mitigate most of the problems. The mobile web has the advantage of being much less phone specific. This maximises the number of phones that can be supported and reduces the number of problems. When problems are found, they can often be fixed on the server.
You can try Tiggdo.com for yourself by installing Opera for Windows and browsing from your PC. The service is currently very US -centric but demonstrates the kind of thing that could one day become a challenge to network operator portals.
Update: There’s a UK-centric version at http://www.tiggdo.com/ukSite/index.php
