Bucking the trend for closed linux based phones, SavaJe have released a new Jasper phone and partner program allowing developers to create custom user interfaces…

"The Jasper S20 is the first Java powered mobile phone to support an early access version of JSR-209 specifications, providing Java Platform Micro Edition application developers with the ability to create advanced user interfaces for mobile phones and devices using Swing and Java2D."

It’s strange to offer a development phone before the market has been announced. There’s a clue as to the future market in the SavaJe press release…

"The SavaJe-based Jasper S20 is manufactured by Group Sense Limited of Hong Kong and will ship this summer in Asian markets."
