First Series 60 3rd Edition Freeware

One of the most-used Series 60 1st/2nd Edition freeware applications must be FExplorer. It’s especially useful for developers as it allows files and directories to be manipulated to, for example, change program settings and view log files.

I have been waiting for a Series 60 3rd Edition version of FExplorer for a while now. The author, Dominique Hugo, has promised a new version (on the FExplorer forums) but the changes to many of the programming APIs are proving troublesome.

As I missed having the program, I decided to write a new file explorer for myself. The beta version of SExplorer can be found on my web site. It doesn’t do as much as FExplorer yet but covers most of what I need to do.

One limitation at the moment is that it doesn’t allow access to protected directories such as ’sys’ and ‘private’. I aim to get the application Symbian Signed via the Freeware Route to Market to allow access to private directories.

I have previously signed Symbian applications for my customers under the pre-9.1 scheme. It will be interesting to see how difficult it is to take the freeware route especially since I have a requirement for the ‘AllFiles’ manufacturer capability.

The first complication I have already come across is that it’s not possible to get a development certificate for a manufacturer capability without having a Verisign ACS Publisher ID. I was told by Symbian Signed…

"A process is currently reviewed by the phone manufacturers to allow developers to create phone manufacturer capable devcerts."

OK, ACS Publisher ID it is then. I’ll post my progress.
