What People Carry and Why
Jan Chipcase who works for Nokia in the HCI Group has made available a presentation on Mobile Essentials: What People Carry and Why. While the presentation is heavy on images rather than information (you probably had to be at the presentation to get the salient points), there are a few snippets worth thinking about…

These are the key areas that people care about when mobile. The conclusion of the presentation is that people often forget important items even though they can’t do without them. The solution is to have nothing to remember by delegating the above functions to technology (i.e. a single device… the mobile phone).
As an example, it would be great if we could pay for everything using our phone. Taking things further, why don’t we use phones as keys to unlock doors? This has overtones of a previous post of mine where Sprint discovered that people would prefer extra features that do practical things and interact with their immediate environment.
There’s lots more research by Jan at the Nokia Research Center.
