Open Phone, Closed Phone
There’s an interesting article on Mobile Linux by Bill Weinberg that was published in Linux User and Developer. The gist of the article is that despite mobile Linux being based on an open OS, phone OEMs and network operators are preferring to keep their mobile phones closed to third party development and enhancement. Bill Weinberg is the OSDL’s representative for the Mobile Linux Initiative and is inviting developers to join the debate on whether closed devices should continue to dominate.

Bill has recently written some enlightening articles if you want to learn more about the issues related to mobile Linux…
"OSDL Mobile Linux Initiative - The Linux Platform and the explo$ive mobile market" in LinuxWorld Magazine, February 2006 issue, pp. 14-16.
"Get longer battery life in Linux-based handsets". In CommsDesign, an EE Times Community. January 16, 2006.
