The Most Popular Devices for Downloads

handango.gifIf you are looking to write a new application to sell to consumers, take a look at Handango’s latest Yardsticks. The special edition Yardsticks are comprised of a 2005 Year End edition as well specific editions for each of the five major mobile operating systems: BlackBerry, Palm OS, Symbian OS and Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone.

Some interesting statistics…

  • Although mostly absent from the 2004 Yardstick, multimedia was the hot new category for 2005.
  • The Yardstick reported an overall increase in the average selling price (ASP) of content, up from $16.96 in 2004 to $20.03 in 2005.
  • Only four of the top ten devices adding content in 2004 — the Palm Treo 600/650, O2 XDA, Sony Ericsson P900/P910 and Palm Tungsten T Series — made this year’s top ten list.

The last point demonstrates that the popular devices change regularly. This makes it hard for developers to keep up with the latest platforms and devices.

The Symbian Yardstick also shows that UIQ and Series 80 users download significantly more applications than Series 60 users. This is surprising given that Series 60 accounts for a very large proportion of all shipped Symbian devices.
