Palm OS + Linux + Phone = ACCESS Linux Platform

palmsource.gifOf all the announcements from 3GSM, I think the one that has the greatest potential to affect future mobile development is one from Access. They intend to take Palm OS, port it to Linux, add telephony and produce… "a comprehensive yet flexible and integrated commercial-grade Linux based solution for the mobile market"

In terms of 3rd party software development…

"Providing new opportunities for developers - The mobile Linux market is expected to grow from shipments of 3.5 million in 2005 to 28.1 million by 2010, according to the industry analyst firm Informa*. This presents new opportunities for both Palm OS® and Linux third-party developers. ALP has been designed to ensure that properly written Palm OS 68K applications will run unchanged. We believe that this compatibility will enable PalmSource’s robust community of over 420,000 registered developers to potentially reach new customers and markets."

I had previously written Palm OS off - maybe I will have to think again. I think the success of 3rd party use of the ACCESS Linux Platform (and 3rd Party Mobile Linux development in general) will largely depend on the tools and SDKs. More specifically, they need to be accessible and easy to use.
