Series 60 3rd Edition SDK
Nokia Forum have release the final (not beta) version of the Series 60 3rd Edition SDK. This is a significant release as it forms the basis for programs built for forthcoming Series 60 Symbian 9.1 phones.
Symbian 9.1 is a major change to the Symbian OS that allows for improved application security and architectural changes that make it easier for Symbian to used on cheaper, mass market phones. Security is being enhanced so that it won’t be possible to access some of the phone’s features without the user’s explicit permission or by having the application Symbian Signed. The new opportunity is the potential of a much larger market for mobile Symbian applications.
Symbian estimate that by 2008, hundreds of millions of Symbian phones will be shipped every year rather than tens of millions as at present. The cost is that Symbian 9.1 introduces a ‘binary break’ which means that old applications won’t run on new phones. Old applications must be modified and recompiled by developers to work on Series 60 3rd Edition (E Series and latest N series) phones.
