Kiosk Applications
I have written a few times about using consumer hardware for vertical solutions. Today, I came across the idea of using the iPad for kiosk-style applications.
Re-using consumer hardware makes a lot of sense. However, one problem is provisioning lots of devices with an application, without it having to go through the app store. There’s currently a limit of 100 ad-hoc devices per year, per developer. Also, it’s not possible to have the device work in ‘kiosk’ mode where users can’t gain access to the other iPad applications.
With Android tablets starting to ship, it might make more sense to use these instead. In some cases, you will be able to re-flash the device to remove/disable the underlying consumer apps and/or cause it to be always running your kiosk application.
