Maemo, iPhone, Android Cross-Browser Guidelines
Forum Nokia have a great new document and example code explaining how to design websites and optimise them for S60, Maemo, iPhone and Android.
The document and examples are based on standard Nokia Mobile Web Templates for High-End Devices. These..
"Provide a set of fully styled and customisable mobile web elements and are an ideal starting point for cross-browser design because they are designed with flexibility in mind."
This includes layouts and elements (data tables, navigation bars, content boxes, and containers) that adapt automatically to different screen widths and easy-to-customise CSS, that includes the use of CSS sprites to improve performance. There’s also code for user agent detection with separate style sheets that are used to tweak the styles catering for minor differences between browsers (font size, padding, or margin support).
While it’s strange to see Android and iPhone screenshots in a Nokia document, I am very pleased Nokia thought beyond their own closed world of Maemo and S60. In the real world, we need to consider all the popular platforms.
