Which J2ME IDE ?
I recently took a fresh look into the available J2ME IDEs….
I had thought things might have moved on from a year and a half ago when my favourite IDE was Borland. I was right but still came away a little disappointed. It’s great that J2ME midlets can now be developed in Eclipse. It’s feature packed and best of all it’s free.
Finding a suitable J2ME plug-in was a challenge. The latest Nokia SDKs looked promising as they supported Series 40/60 emulation and Eclipse. However, for some reason debugging stopped working after a time and I wasn’t able to get it working again. Not very good at all. Eventually I settled on EclipseME which is far more reliable.
I also evaluated the latest Sun (Mobile Studio Mobility) and Borland offerings but nothing came as close to Eclipse + Eclipse ME for ease of use.
Update 23rd August 2005 : EclipseME 1.1 has been released which supports Eclipse 3.1
